The Shortest Distance Between Backup and Recovery

A short while ago I spent about 30 minutes working on (and eventually succeeding at) restoring 15 files a customer had mistakenly deleted. A task that should have only taken 3 clicks and 5 minutes, instead took about 30 clicks and just as many minutes. Click after click, prompt after prompt, and even a reboot of the tape device was needed to rectify the situation. In case you haven’t put two and two together yet – yes, a customer of mine is still using TAPE to back up their files!

10 Apparently Not-Too-Obvious “No-No”s in Website Design

crybabyJust like we all think our kids are the cutest, and their incessant wailing at the playground isn’t bothering anyone, most of us have a hard time taking an objective look at our own websites. After 10 years of reviewing websites and explaining the results to customers, I’m still amazed how enlightening some of the most obvious observations can be. It’s not because they aren’t designers, or aren’t intelligent enough to see the problems, it’s that they are too close to their own baby and sometimes need a face full of cold water to bring them back to reality.

Waving Goodbye

Bye-bye to Google WaveAs I start to read the articles about the departure of Google Wave as a standalone offering I reflect on my collaboration experiences while riding the wave. When it was first rolled out and Lars Rasmussen talked about the new communication and collaboration tool, I was quite excited and embraced the invitation to use this ground breaking communication / collaboration platform. It’s hard to believe it was only a year ago, and at the time it seemed to have been hyped to deflate the Bing launch. Regardless, I jumped right in.
